Catholic School Teacher Fired For Not Annulling Marriage

A longtime Catholic high school teacher in Waterloo said he was fired for not getting his first marriage annulled.

The Cedar Valley Catholic School Board voted this week to accept the forced resignation of Tom Girsch, NewsChannel 8 reported.

Girsch taught and coached at Columbus High School in Waterloo for nearly 30 years.

He divorced his first wife in 1997 and married a Catholic widow in 2006.

The Archdiocese of Dubuque said Girsch married outside the laws of the church but he said the church denied him an annulment, and he is now fighting for his job.
