Vatican confirms papal visit to Austria in September

The Vatican has officially confirmed plans for Pope Benedict XVI to visit Austria in September.

The Holy Father will be in Austria from September 7 to 9, for celebrations surrounding the 850th anniversary of the Marian shrine at Mariazell.

The Pope's visit to that beloved shrine, located in the shadow of the Austrian Alps, will be on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin, September 8.

The remainder of the Pope's schedule for the trip has not yet been disclosed.

Preparations for a papal visit to Mariazell are already well advanced, and today's official announcement confirmed a plan that was already well known.

The Vatican traditionally does not provide official confirmation of papal trips until a few weeks before they take place.
