Pope to visit Assisi Today

Pope Benedict XVI will travel to Assisi, Italy, today, June 17, to mark the 800th anniversary of the conversion of St. Francis.

The Holy Father will make the trip to Assisi by helicopter, leaving Rome early on Sunday morning.

He will preside at a Mass at the basilica, then lead the Angelus, before making a private visit to pray at the tomb of St. Francis.

In the afternoon the Pope will hold meetings with religious, priests, and seminarians, visiting the different churches of Assisi.

Finally he will speak to young people at a 6 pm gathering in front of the basilica of St. Mary of the Angels.

The Pope's return helicopter flight is due to arrive in Rome early on Sunday evening.
