Polish archbishop raps government on failed pro-life amendment

During his homily for the Feast of Corpus Christi, Archbishop Jozef Michalik of Przemysl, the president of the Polish bishops' conference, criticized the country's governing coalition for an inadequate commitment to defending human life.

“The Law and Justice Party failed the moral test," Archbishop Michalik said. "The current governing party does not defend life."

While he decried the willingness of the ruling coalition to drop plans for a pro-life constitutional amendment, the archbishop praised the former speaker of the Polish parliament, Marek Jurek, who resigned his position when the amendment failed.

"There are still honest politicians," the archbishop reflected.

The general secretary of the Law and Justice Party, Joachim Brudzinski, responded to the archbishop’s statement.

Brudzinski stated, “We do not differ from Jurek in our convictions that it is necessary to defend life. The disagreement only concerns strategy. The opening of a battle over pro-life legislation could lead to the reactivation of the pro-abortionists.”
