Ghana: Bishop Mante Extricates Self From Gabusu's Marrige Saga

THE MOST Reverend Gabriel A.A. Mante, Catholic Bishop of the Jasikan Diocese, has pontificated on the sanctity of Catholic matrimony, noting that he would be the last person to support any break-up of a Catholic marriage.

He said divorce in the Catholic Church is not permissible and even where it is permitted, he is not in a position to support or condone such an act.

The Bishop was reacting to our story of June 12th headlined: "V/R house of Chief's Prez in bigamy brouhaha?"

Bishop Mante explained that he reluctantly accepted to mediate in the case where the President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Hohoe Traditional Area, Togbega Gabusu VI was accused by some of the Stool Clans of the Paramountcy for snatching a legally married woman, Ms. Eunice Darkoa Lartey to be his wife and even has three children with her currently.

Bishop Mante said when the case was sent to the Hohoe Court by the Torkoni clan, the Court referred the issue to him for an amicable settlement for peace to reign in the Traditional Area.

"I reluctantly after some hesitation and even sought the consent of the two legal counsel of the two feuding parties before deciding to mediate for peace to reign", he said, noting that he agreed purely on traditional point of view and not on the point of any Catholic doctrine.

Bishop Mante said the leaving of the matrimonial home by Ms. Lartey from her legally married husband, Mr. Stephen Kwesi Atteh, to have a traditional marriage with the Paramount Chief before the woman's family, could not be attributed to him.

He was a bit peeved that even since that meting with the two feuding factions and after sending back the results of the proceedings of the said meeting to the Hohoe Court, the Court has not had the courtesy to acknowledge what he has done for peace to prevail in the Traditional Area.

Bishop Mante explained that the Hohoe Catholic Diocese is not under his jurisdiction of the Jasikan Diocese.
