Secretary Named For Clergy Congregation

Benedict XVI named Bishop Mauro Piacenza (pic'd here) as secretary of the Congregation for Clergy and elevated him to archbishop.

He has worked in that dicastery since 1990 and in the post of undersecretary since 2000.

Now-Archbishop Piacenza, 62, will maintain "ad interim" his positions as president of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church and president of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology.

Archbishop Piacenza replaces Archbishop Csaba Ternyak, 53, who was appointed in March to lead the Archdiocese of Eger, Hungary.

The president of the Congregation for Clergy is Cardinal Cláudio Hummes.
