Pope In Internet Mass Row

The Pope is at loggerheads with Brazillian Roman Catholic bishops who want remote communities to celebrate Mass over the internet.

The move to counter the severe shortage of clergy in some areas would see worshippers taking communion by placing their unleavened bread in front of their computer monitors to be consecrated.

The idea will be discussed today at the first Episcopal Conference of South American bishops to be held for a decade.

It is also seen as a way of reaching out to a young internet savvy generation.

But in February the Pope insisted that communion over the internet, had 'no spiritual value'.

The Vatican said yesterday that internet Mass was 'no substitute' for going to church, but seemed prepared to turn a blind eye to the practice.
