Dalai Lama Snubbed In Canberra

Greens leader Bob Brown says the Federal Government is kow-towing to communist China by refusing to host an official parliamentary reception for the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama, Tibet's leading political and spiritual figure, is due to visit Canberra next month as part of his tour of Australia.

The President of the Senate has written to Senator Brown to advise he will not be receiving an official reception because of "international sensitivities".

Senator Brown says it is a disgrace he has been snubbed.

"Here we have in Canberra this obsequious, weak-at-the-knees, we-must-bow-to-President-Hu-and-the-communists-in-Beijing attitude from of all people but John Howard," he said.

"This lets down Australia's proud record of standing up against dictators and welcoming peacemakers."
