Anglicans Converge On Grafton For Synod

The Grafton diocese of the Anglican Church is holding its annual synod in Grafton this weekend.

Representatives of more than 30 parishes from Port Macquarie to the Queensland border will meet to discuss community and social welfare issues, education and other Anglican initiatives in the region.

A spokesman for the Grafton diocese, Vivian Hoskins, says a focus of this year's synod is the environment, and the church's role in getting people to think environmentally from a spiritual standpoint.

Mr Hoskins says two ordinations will be a feature of the synod.

"One is a guy called John Tyman, who is a man shall we say of senior years from a little village of Uki on the upper Tweed," she said.

"He's been around the world doing all sorts of things with Indigenous people over the last I don't know how many years.

"On the other hand we have Rachel Rhynehart [who] came out of Port Macquarie is now the chaplain at Emmanuel Anglican College in Ballina. Rachel's in her fairly early 20s and she's working with young people."
