The Russian version of the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church will be presented on Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Moscow.The Compendium, just as the Catechism itself, consists of four interconnected parts and represents an accessible and comprehensive statement of the Catholic faith in the form of a dialogue between a catechist and a listener.
Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, head of the Diocese of the Mother of God in Moscow, presented the new edition as ‘a source that conveys clearly and precisely the essence of the Catholic doctrine, which is to turn to it in order to get a coherent and authentic idea of the faith and morality.’
The Catechism of the Catholic Church was developed under John Paul II and officially published in 1992.
In 2003, the pope decided that its compendium be issued so that any person may study a brief and clear statement of the basics of the faith. The work was completed in two years and Pope Benedict XVI presented the Compendium on June 28, 2005.
The Russian version of the ‘greater’ Catechism of the Catholic Church went into 814 pages.
According to Jean-Francois Thiry, director of the Spiritual Library cultural center, it has been reprinted six times with 12 thousand copies for the last ten years.
The first edition of the 216-page Compendium has 3 thousand copies.
‘You make the right choice when you look for the knowledge of Christ and the Church not in detective stories, which would violate the truth for the sake of suspense, nor in fashionable movies, which present authors’ fantasies as historical realities, but in the text approved by a successor of St. Peter and written to give an adequate reflection to Christian faith’, Archbishop Kondrusiewicz stressed in the foreword to the edition as cited by the press service of his archdiocese.
He expressed hope that the Compendium would become very popular and ‘serve as an effective instrument of evangelization and strengthening of Christian faith and contribute to cooperation between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches in preaching and protecting Christian values’.
