Catholic Clerics Slam Zimbabwe's Mugabe

Roman Catholic bishops in Zimbabwe have broken with tradition and issued a damning letter criticizing President Robert Mugabe and calling for an election.

The letter was read in all Zimbabwean Catholic churches on Sunday, and calls for a new constitution "that will guide a democratic leadership chosen in free and fair elections," a correspondent for The Guardian reported from Harare.

The letter also said young Zimbabweans "see their leaders habitually engaging in acts and words which are hateful, disrespectful, racist, corrupt, lawless, unjust, greedy, dishonest and violent in order to cling to the privileges of power and wealth."

Mugabe came under international criticism last month when political demonstrators were beaten by police. Last week, Mugabe said his opponents deserved to be "bashed," the report said.

The bishops' letter said Mugabe's confiscation of white-owned properties as part of his decolonialization had enriched the black elite, but did nothing for the poor.
