WARSAW, Poland – The former Warsaw archbishop who resigned after admitting he agreed to cooperate with the communist-era secret police has asked a special court to investigate the case against him, a court spokesman said.

Poland's powerful Roman Catholic Church was rattled when Stanislaw Wielgus abruptly resigned as Warsaw archbishop just minutes before he was to be formally installed at an opulent Mass on Jan. 7.

Advertisement On Tuesday, Wielgus' lawyer filed the appeal to the special screening court in Warsaw, court spokesman Zbigniew Puszkarski said.

The special court allows public individuals accused of collaboration to seek a ruling on whether they were informers – a step some opt for in an attempt to clear their names.

Puszkarski said the court would decide next week whether to take up the case.
