Polish Scarlett Pimpernel (12)

In Poland, the private radio station RMF-FM is reporting that a longtime friend of the late Pope John Paul II was an informer for the Communist secret police.

RMF-FM claims that documents in the Institute of National Remembrance show that Father Mieczyslaw Malinski provided information about Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski and then-Cardinal Karol Wojtyla. Father Malinski worked with the secret police over a number of years, the radio station says.

Father Malinski became friendly with Karol Wojtyla in 1940, when they were members of the “living rosary” group formed by the tailor Jan Tyranowski.

Like the future Pontiff, Malinski entered the underground seminary operated by Cardinal Adam Sapieha during World War II and was ordained to the priesthood.

Later he became a columnist for Tygodnik Powszechny, a Catholic weekly which provided a free voice under Communism, and the author of numerous books.
