End Concordat - Freemasons (Dominican Republic)

Santo Domingo.- The order of Masons yesterday demanded the canceling of the Dominican Government’s decades old accord (Concordat) with the Vatican, and the establishment of a lay State to guarantee the absolute equality of all beliefs of a religious, philosophical or spiritual nature.

They recommend including both initiatives in the first draft of the constitutional reform.

In a letter to Senate president Reinaldo Pard, the Masons propose that "the role of the State would be limited to maintaining and respecting the rights to freedom of conscience and of cults."

The Masons made the same demand last year, which prompted no response from the Government.
