Catholic honour for Israeli writer

A Catholic university founded by Pope Martin in 1425 has honoured an Israeli Jewish writer for his efforts to bring both the Palestinian issue and the Holocaust to world attention.

Peace activist David Grossman was awarded an honorary doctorate of Letters on Friday by officials from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, which is the oldest university in the Low Countries.

A statement from the university said: “Throughout the years Grossman has published several novels that were translated into various languages, among them The Smile of the Lamb, See Under: Love, The Zigzag Kid and numerous political articles.“His works enable other voices talking about the Palestinian issue and the Holocaust to be heard.

In his writing Grossman speaks out against one-sided thinking and calls for dialog and tolerance. While he was speaking out against the war in Lebanon during the last summer, that very same conflict took the life of his son who was killed in a military operation.”

Ever since its beginning, the university has attracted numerous famous scholars. In the sixteenth century the humanist Desiderius Erasmus lectured there, and founded a college.
