Cardinal Zen: Papal letter due at Easter

HONG KONG (Zenit.org) -- The letter Benedict XVI is preparing for Chinese Catholics should be ready "around Easter," says Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun.
Statements by the bishop of Hong Kong to the diocesan weekly Kung Kao Po were echoed by AsiaNews.

According to the cardinal, the letter's wording about relations between Beijing and the Holy See will be "prudent."

A prudent dialogue is possible with the Chinese government, but "on religious freedom, the Vatican should have a clear stance," the cardinal said. "This is not an irrational request."

Cardinal Zen was among the participants in the meeting called by Benedict XVI in the Vatican on Jan. 19-20 on the situation of the Catholic Church in China.

AsiaNews reported that the cardinal spoke about the situation caused by last year's illicit episcopal ordinations in China, citing the system followed in Vietnam as a possible compromise for the Vatican and Beijing.

The Vietnam model is "quite good," the cardinal said. Under that system, he explained, the Vatican presents "several appropriate candidates to the government and, after considering opinions expressed by the government, the Pope makes the final decision."
