Battle of the Bishops? - Italy

The Vatican has flatly denied a report, published in a major Italian daily, that Italian bishops are battling over the presidency of their country’s episcopal conference.

The Turin-based newspaper La Stampa reported that bishops from the Piedmont region had written to Pope Benedict XVI, stating their opinion that Cardinal Angelo Scola should not be named the next president of the Italian bishops’ conference.

The Piedmont bishops, La Stampa said, expressed reservations over Cardinal Scola’s theological and political stands, and particularly his close ties with the lay movement Communion and Liberation.
