Archdiocese In The Docks (3)

As mentioned in previous postings on this blogspot, the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, Dr Dermot Clifford would yet come to rue those words of his when he said he was ‘gratified’ at the decision of an American court back in 2006 when the court decided that it could not indict either the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly or indeed St Patrick’s College, Thurles (seminary at which Oliver O’Grady studied) in any legal action.

Dr Clifford had also said that 'if Oliver O'Grady's paedophile tendencies had been known by either the authorities in St Patrick's College, Thurles or by the former Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, Oliver O'Grady would not have been ordained.'

John Manly, an attorney who is active in the cases against O’Grady, had pledged that he would ensure the cases would be taken all the way to the US Supreme Court if necessary, and also that another victim of O’Grady had come forward to say that he was abused by O’Grady before his being ordained a priest back in 1971.

This would obviously cause some discomfort to both the Archdiocese and the Seminary, and now it looks as if that moment has now started to come to make its passing with the allegation that O’Grady molested a now 47year old man when the victim was an altar boy.

The abuse is alleged to have occurred in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s in Limerick, and the victim has now expressed the hope that a film which has already aired in America will now encourage other victims who suffered at the hands of O’Grady to come forward.

‘People are scared, and when this movie comes out, they are going to be more scared even more if O’Grady is still seen around the place. It is only a matter of time before he is caught but why is it taking so long? Ireland is a small place and this needs to be brought to people’s attention and fast before he does it again…and he will!’

Yesterday, Saturday February 17th, 2007, the film about O’Grady entitled Deliver Us From Evil, was premiered in Dublin, where O’Grady now lives.

Since it was shown in USA last year, the film director, Amy Berg, has indicated that because of it being aired, more victims of O’Grady have come forward, including the Limerick victim whose story is given above.

This man came forward after seeing the film in America, and on his return to his home in Dublin, contacted John Manly in California to begin action against O’Grady, and his abuse is known to have happened whilst O’Grady was still studying in St Patrick’s in Thurles. This could make things difficult for the Archbishop, Archdiocese and St Patrick’s in time to come.

Presently, O’Grady is living in Ireland without being monitored and is studying computers, which has led to suggestions that he may have been one of the 2 people named in the notice from the Austrian police in relation to the internet child pornography ring as referred to by this

blogspot. The failure of the Gardaí to act in relation to this information is only too well documented also, and again poses the question as to what would have come to light had an investigation taken place.

We will never know now, and this makes it all the more harrowing for all concerned that O’Grady could well be active again, and in time, the Gardaí may yet find themselves under investigation - and hopefully prosecution - for failure to act in these cases.

O’Grady served only 7 years upon his arrest in 1993, and released on condition of his being deported which means he is now in this country 7 years without monitoring…

…and hopefully the Archbishop will become pro-active in this matter…are they flying pigs I see there in the sky??

It is long past time for action and here is hoping that John Manly will win his case against O’Grady, the Archdiocese and the seminary because I personally believe that the Archbishop being ‘gratified’ actually should read smug and arrogant.

Let us all hope that the victims, their families and others who know and love them, will be gratified when O’Grady and those in episcopal authority are prosecuted to the full for knowingly ordaining a paedophile back in 1971….truly the sins of the father returning to haunt!!!
